Moored on the mirror-calm waters of Kashmir’s Dal Lake surrounded by the snow-dusted peaks of the Himalayas, Sukoon perfectly symbolises it’s Sufi meaning; an elevated state of mind combining peace, wisdom and contentment.
Set among floating gardens of flowering lotus in a secluded corner of Dal Lake, with views of the misty Pir Panjal mountains, fairytale hilltop forts and temples, the Sukoon Houseboat has been sensitively restored to seamlessly blend the old-world charm of a traditional houseboat with modern comforts. Original intricate carved wood panelling, ornate chandeliers, whirring fans, creaky pine floors and colonial style furniture are complemented with cool cream linens and colourful silks to add a contemporary twist. The experienced chef offers a wide range of Kashmiri and continental dishes and there is even wi-fi.
There is much to be seen from the peaceful sanctuary of the houseboat. From sunrise to sunset gaily painted shikaras and floating flower sellers laden with roses and delphiniums drift by, parents paddle children to and from school and fishermen cast their nets. But if you can tear yourselves away there are fascinating days to be spent exploring. Visit Mughal Gardens, timeless mountain villages, and the bazaars and mosques of Srinagar’s old town, or recline in a shikara as you are paddled around the tranquil.
